What this variant means
Venmo's Visa Direct instant transfer line.
A VENMO entry is money moving through the Venmo app — a payment you sent, a purchase from a business profile, or Venmo pulling from your bank or card to fund one.
Why it shows up like this
Venmo (owned by PayPal) shows the friend or business you paid inside the app, but your bank only sees Venmo. VENMO CASHOUT is a transfer of your Venmo balance to the bank; VENMO *PAYMENT is a funded payment going out.
Don’t recognize it? You might still
- The person you paid is only visible in the Venmo app, never on the bank statement.
- Venmo pulls from your bank days after the in-app payment when your balance was short.
- Some online stores and in-person vendors accept Venmo, so it isn't always person-to-person.
What to do, in order
- Open the Venmo transaction feed The 'Me' tab lists every payment with recipient and note. Match the amount.
- Check for account takeover if nothing matches Unrecognized Venmo pulls are a common fraud pattern. Change the password, enable PIN and 2FA, and check linked cards and banks.
- Know the limits of P2P protection Money sent person-to-person to a scammer is hard to claw back. Unauthorized use of your account, by contrast, is a fraud claim Venmo and your bank must investigate.
